'Saving the Alien Girl' is in two respects, for my circumstances, unusual artwork. First, it is the genre produces one of my very few motifs, in the field of science fiction are found, and secondly, I have used in this artwork, one for me completely new technology - the Digital Sculpting. To the latter will meet again this Making Of Turn, in fact I would like to try, to give an insight into this exciting technology, which at first glance looks like 3D graphics, But clearly in many crucial respects different from the classical work in 3D programs. By Daniel Lieske.
An illustration project in ZBrush and Photoshop
Although I am in the almost 10 I worked years of working in the computer industry often associated with 3D graphics, i am, particularly in the private sector, always remained 2D Artist. 3D Program, with its numerous menus and functions, have for me has always been the charm of an airplane cockpit. 3D models are created through complex steps, we must raise polygons, Points to move and perform various actions, are available at the end of a model, The first time is only an unattractive wire mesh. Then you will not be in a less laborious process of textured surfaces, the whole scene with lights, equip and run endless test calculations, has to be some times produces an image, which one suits. Then, if the end result a great result, you have to almost ask, like after such a technical process is at all possible.
For my creative work I would like to see an intuitive and inspiring work surface. In a program like Photoshop for example. I do, in effect, the same steps, as on paper, only just in a digital environment. But I still meet the same decisions as "time" on the paper and the working experience with the graphics tablet is very close to the classical way of working.
The program ZBrush by Pixologic, has developed a few years ago a new technique, tries, to combine the visual possibilities of 3D graphics with the intuitive way of working with traditional techniques. Just as Photoshop seeking, a substitute for pen and paper, Canvas and paint to be, ZBrush is so ready, represent a substitute for sound and Putty. Instead of using the mouse to navigate through menus, and manipulate the smallest wire mesh components, ZBrush is focused on intuitive work with virtual modeling. This is handled with the stylus and will always appear in a final visual form. There is no separation between modeling and rendering. It always works with the final outcome in mind, in real time and without delays.
Yet, this new approach has stimulated me to, to try the Digital Sculpting. After I had made about a year minor experiments with this technique, I decided to, the technology as part of a larger project put to the test. The cgsociety.org website hosted by the CG Challenge Uplift Universe 'was this an appropriate occasion and so I set out to, over a period of nearly 8 Weeks in the evenings and on weekends, work Saving the Alien Girl 'to.
Each image begins for me with a story. The first step is always, above it is clear, what one really wants to represent. My very first sketch was therefore a very simple way, what should happen in my Picture: a space hero, save a fair maiden from the clutches of an alien beast.
When the hero is a figure, to me many years ago came to mind and their adventures continue to evolve ever since in my head. His name is Captain Orion and he is captain of a mine design space ship, with which he seeks in the asteroid fields for rare minerals. Through an alien portal, he gets into a wondrous space sector, in which he has many opportunities, To commit heroic deeds and adventures of. Although the figure for quite a while floating around in my head, I had never given a concrete form. For the artwork that had to be remedied, of course, and so I drew some sketches of my heroes.
